Toyota quotes a manufacturer estimated 0-60 mph time of 7.2 seconds with AWD, vs. 7.0 seconds for the FWD V6-powered Camry of the past.

To handle the different torque distribution of AWD models, Toyota re-tuned the suspension calibrations on Camry Hybrids equipped with the Dynamic Torque Control system. The front MacPherson struts and rear multi-link suspension are slightly firmer overall. Toyota also upgraded the rear stabilizer bars and steering gear ratio for sportier, more responsive handling.

Unfortunately the AWD system does necessitate the elimination of Toyota’s temporary spare tire on equipped Camry Hybrid models. All 2025 Camry Hybrids with AWD are instead fitted with an inflation kit in lieu of a spare, due to packaging constraints. So owners do not have access to a temporary spare if they get a flat tire. A full-size spare was already unavailable on Camry Hybrids.

Adding AWD does not significantly impact insurance costs either way on the Camry Hybrid. Since the car is still branded as a Camry Hybrid by Toyota, insurance rates do not change much. In some regions, insurers may apply a small AWD surcharge. But the Camry AWD retains the excellent insurance loss statistics and affordability associated with Toyota hybrid models.

The Camry’s AWD system differs from Subaru’s renowned full-time AWD systems. Subaru uses a symmetrical driveline that constantly powers all four wheels, while Toyota’s system only engages AWD on-demand when slip is detected. However, the Camry’s system should prove very capable in winter driving while maximizing efficiency in normal conditions. It also avoids added mechanical complexity in pursuit of full-time AWD.

The Toyota Camry continues to lead the Honda Accord in sales both globally and in the Canadian midsize sedan market. The Camry pulls ahead thanks to strengths like higher resale value, lower ownership costs, and an available AWD option that the Accord lacks. The Camry Hybrid also offers superior fuel efficiency. Overall, both remain excellent choices that appeal to different buyers with varying priorities.

Given proper maintenance and care, Toyota Camrys have proven they can easily last 15 to 20 years or 300,000+ kilometres of driving in Canada. Generations of taxi and fleet usage show how durable Camry components like the engine, transmission, chassis and body are over high mileages. And Toyota hybrid components are designed for long-term reliability matching the rest of the vehicle.
